History

" The Annex " in 1845 as part of the Fort Zachary Taylor, a facility of the U.S. Army constructed. The fort was probably rebuilt in 1947 by the " Fort Zachary Taylor Annex" to the Naval Station Key West. 1932 new docks were built as a home base for submarines of the U.S. Navy. In 1974, the base was largely abandoned because the plants were too small for the modern nuclear submarines. Today, the Naval Air Station Key West operates about 10 kilometers east on the island of Boca Chica Key as the primary base for the Navy in Key West.

The area of the former Fort is now in the possession of the State of Florida and was named " Fort Zachary Taylor State Park." A large part of the Annex was sold to private investors who have it converted into a gated community, and an area of about 130,000 m2 of the City of Key West was charged passed as green space. The rest of the area is still used as a military facility and is known as " Naval Air Station Key West - Truman Annex ".

During the Mariel boat crisis in the 1980s, many Cuban refugees arrived on the Truman Annex in the United States.
