The Tubophon is a musical instrument belonging to the family of percussion instruments.

The name

Tubophon: Composed of tubo = pipe (Latin - tubus ) and phon = sound, sound (Greek - phonos ).

History

The history of Tubophons begins in 2004, with the chance discovery of the acoustic properties of sealed with a plastic cap district heating steel pipes, by engineer Stefan Schubert. The archaic, quaint sound inspired Schubert to build a percussion instrument with different tube lengths and thicknesses. Together with Prof. Peter Sadlo was a prototype for the musical highlight of the inauguration of the geothermal project in Pullach built. The then " Geothermiephon " mentioned equipment, however, was dismantled and terminated the further reasons of cost.

In 2010, the financial and construction music project started again. In six weeks after a new, portable design concept over 160 m of pipe material were welded with the help of a heavy lifter. Here again was Prof. Peter Sadlo with suggestions and ideas for playability and tonal range advisory capacity, the procedure was more experimental than predictable.

On 25 June 2010 the Tubophon occasion of the inauguration of geothermal energy center in Unterföhring was played for the first time by Prof Peter Sadlo and Double Bass.

2011, the utility model has been registered at the German Patent and Trademark Office.

Construction and design

The Tubophon consists largely of steel tubes with plastic sheathing and insulation, as used for district heating networks. A total of 19 different sounds are produced from 125 m pipe. The tubes are sealed to the playing surface with a plastic cap as the eardrum, the other sides of the tubes are open. Developed by graphic artist Michael Wladarsch of 84 GHz design recalls the slopes and angles of a flattened organ, silver, partially elliptical truncated tails of the great " side pipes " to large-volume exhaust pipes. The painting of silver tubes with black sheath is reflected in the writing of Tubophons. The final locksmith services for the lower and Verstrebungsrahmen gave the division into four modules, each weighing 1-2 to each module. The transport of Tubophons by means of mobile crane per module each on a truck.

Game art

The game is played the Tubophon, similar to other percussion instruments, with sticks or mallets by striking the eardrums ( plastic caps ). The tubes themselves do not oscillate, but the resulting air pressure produces the sound. For small, short tubes arise when striking pop -like, high tones to garnet -like blows. In the large, long tubes several basic shades are partially depending on stroke technique, produced with several overtones. The sound produced here is difficult to describe, but makes the uniqueness of the instrument from. The sounds can not be retuned in the current design. The independent dynamics and physical presence of the sounds to be reproduced little or no record or on recordings.
