Tuna pot

Marmitako, Marmitaco, in Basque also Sorropotún, Marmita or in Cantabria also Marmite is a fish stew that is prepared with tuna, potatoes, onions, peppers and tomatoes.

Origin

The origin of this stew is Basque. It was probably prepared and consumed by the Basque fishermen. The word is derived from the Basque Marmitako marmita; a Marmita is a pot with a lid. This pot was one of the few cooking utensils that have been taken by the fishermen on board their ship with at sea.

Dissemination

Some dishes of Basque cuisine have gradually spread throughout Spain. In the course of Marmitako also became known and is now a very popular stew that is cooked in many regions.

In the Basque Country Marmitako is common in cooking competitions. As with many traditional dishes of Spain, there are different versions from place to place. The above ingredients should be included but in any case in the stew.
