Tunisian General Labour Union

The Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail ( UGTT ) is the name given to the Tunisian trade union umbrella organization with headquarters in Tunis. The association was founded on the initiative of its then first Chairman Farhat Hached on January 20, 1946 by the union of a number of individual unions. The UGTT was at the forefront of the struggle for obtaining the state independence in March 1956 by the French protectorate. In December 1952 Farhat Hached was probably the French order, murdered. After the national takeover, there was, however, very quickly to conflict with the more totalitarian oriented new government under Habib Bourguiba. The state tried again and again by violent acts to exert its influence. Multi- union chairman were arrested. Even today varies the attitude and self-image of the union that acts as a single union, between the approach of employee representation and a power transmission belt of the state, which predominates in higher official circles in particular.
