Turbinicarpus knuthianus

Turbinicarpus knuthianus is a flowering plant in the genus Turbinicarpus from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ).

Description

Turbinicarpus knuthianus grows mostly single with bluish green, slightly depressed spherical bodies and has mostly fibrous roots. The body can reach growth height 3-6 centimeters in diameter and from 3.5 to 7 centimeters. Their conical protuberances are 5-7 millimeters high. There are 1-2 white, slightly upturned central spine with a length of 10 to 16 millimeters available. The 15 to 20 radiating spines are white, slender, straight and 6 to 8 millimeters long.

The bright magenta flowers have a darker markings. They are 2.3 to 2.8 inches long, and have diameters of 1.8 to 2.5 centimeters. Almost spherical, yellowish green fruits are to 9 millimeters long and reach a diameter of 7 to 8 mm.

Systematics, distribution and hazard

Turbinicarpus knuthianus is common in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí. The first description was in 1930 as Echinocactus knuthianus by Frederick Boedeker. Václav John and Jan Říha ( b. 1947 ), they 1983 in the genus Turbinicarpus.

Synonyms are Gymnocactus knuthianus ( Boed. ) Backeb. , Pediocactus knuthianus ( Boed. ) Halda, Thelocactus knuthianus ( Boed. ) Borg, Neolloydia knuthianus ( Boed. ) FMKnuth and Turbinicarpus saueri subsp. knuthianus ( Boed. ) Lüthy.
