Turbotrain

As a group of former Turbo Trains propelled by gas turbines French high-speed trains is called for passenger, including a direct ancestor of today's TGV. The railcars were placed at the service of the state railway SNCF in 1967 and drove until 2005.

Overall, there were four Turbotrain versions:

  • The converted from an EEAS DMUs Experimentalzug TGS, which was used from April 25, 1967 for test drives. On October 15, 1971, the TGS reached a speed of 252 km / h
  • The first - generation Turbotrain ETG ( Elément turbine à à Gaz ) included four -car multiple units with 188 seats, which had both a diesel engine and a gas turbine. The 14 ETG were used from 1971 on the route from Paris to Caen to Cherbourg and retired by 1999.
  • As a second - generation Turbotrain were built 1972-1976 RTG ( Rame à Turbine à Gaz ). The 41 vehicles had a hydraulic transmission and two gas turbines with an output of 820 kW, with which a top speed of 160 km / h could be achieved. A unit consisted of five cars with 280 seats. The RTG were also used on the routes Strasbourg -Lyon and Lyon -Nantes, 1975 starting from 1973 between Paris, Caen and Cherbourg and Paris, Deauville, Cabourg Dives and. After the electrification of the route Paris - Caen - Cherbourg in 1996, the RTG trains were used until 2005 on the line from Lyon to Bordeaux. The RTG trains were popular among the passengers, which is why their replacement was regretted by Corail trains often. An operative RTG unit is now in the Railway Museum Mulhouse.
  • The Experimentalzug TGV 001 was completed in 1972 as a prototype for the TGV system and made numerous test drives, where speeds of up to 318 km / h were achieved. Especially after the 1973 oil crisis, however, the use of gas turbines for the TGV project appeared no longer economically, so that one turning to electric traction. The TGV 001 was turned off after the end of the test series in 1978. The two power cars of the train were placed in Bischheim and Belfort as a technical monument.
