Türkentor (Munich)

The Türkentor is a Grade II listed building in Munich. It is the only remaining building the rest of the 1826 built Türkenkaserne, the barracks of the Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment body. The term Türkenkaserne derives from the Turkish road. This name, in turn, goes back to the Turks ditch along the Kurfürstendamm shopping street, which was allegedly dug by Turkish prisoners of war from the time of the Turkish wars in the early 18th century. The trench should be a waterway that would connect as part of the North Munich channel system, the Electoral Munich Residence with Schleissheim Palace.

Between 2008 and 2010, the Türkentor was renovated in what the Foundation presented Pinakothek der Moderne 780,000 euros. The re-opened in October 2010 Türkentor houses since acquired by the Foundation Brandhorst Sculpture Large Red Sphere by American artist Walter De Maria.
