The Turkwel is a river flowing from Mount Elgon on the Kenyan- Ugandan border to Lake Turkana. From its source to the border of the West Pokot District, it is called Suan. The name derives from the word Tirkol from the language of the Turkana, the " good fishing river " means. Early 90s was built with assistance from France the Turkwel Dam and a controversial hydroelectric plant. Due to the fluctuating water levels rather little electricity is produced.
