Tuxtla Gutiérrez ( Spanish pronunciation: [ tustla ɣutjeres ] ) is the capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The town lies in the valley of the Río Grijalva. Its population is 455,700 (as of 2003). The city is the seat of the Archdiocese of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

Name

The name comes from the Nahuatl Tuxtla: Tuchtlan, meaning "place of many rabbits ". The epithet honors Gutiérrez Joaquín Miguel Gutiérrez, a Mexican revolutionary of the 19th century.

Culture and sights

Worth seeing in the relatively modern city are the Zoo and up to 1,200 m deep and 60 km long Cañón del Sumidero, which is around 20 km outside of Tuxtla.

Economy and infrastructure

The economy Tuxtlas depends to a large extent by local authorities, the Federal land management from. There is almost no industry and, on the contrary to the rest of Chiapas, many luxury shops.

Important local newspapers are El Cuarto Poder, La República, El Día, El Planeta and Chiapas Hoy. There are a total of six free TV channels, as well as more than 500 Tele cable channels (Sky system).

Traffic

Tuxtla Gutiérrez is developed road technically regional comparatively well through the Carretera Panamericana ( Panamerican highway Mexico 190), a highway from Tuxtla after Coatzacoalcos, the Highway Carretera al Pacífico and seven local highways.

Aviation Technical Tuxtla Gutiérrez is regularly connected by different airlines with several other destinations in Mexico and was admitted to the dense network of domestic flights Interjet and Aeromexico. 2006, the newly built airport of Tuxtla Gutierrez was opened, replacing the old airport of the city and is located southeast of the city on the territory of the neighboring town of Chiapa de Corzo.

Tuxtla Gutiérrez does not have a rail connection. The nearest train station is in Arriaga, some 190 kilometers away. The nearest port is around 200 kilometers and is located in Puerto Arista.
