Geography

Geographical Location

Übelbach is located in the district of Graz-Umgebung in Western Styria about 20 km northwest of the provincial capital of Graz.

Expansion of the municipal area

The market town Übelbach extends from west to east over a distance of about 20 km from the Gleinalpe almost to the Mur valley along the evils creek, a tributary of the River Mur. In the West, located in the municipality of some mountains with altitudes over 1,500 m: Ochsenkogel ( 1,580 m), Speikkogel ( 1,988 m), Lärchkogel ( 1,894 m) and Eiblkogel ( 1,831 m ) and two transitions in the neighboring communities: Gleinalmsattel ( 1,586 m) and Kreuzsattel ( 1,583 m).

Neighboring communities

History

Übelbach is first mentioned in the first half of the 13th century as Ubilpach and is probably named after the creek. In the same century the market was built after silver deposits were discovered in the valley. Silver mining was, however, set in 1500 again.

Only in the 18th century a degree of prosperity developed in Übelbach by the operation of hammer forging, which found through the use of water power and the wooded environs a good spot. The ore was brought from Upper Styria. The iron was placed on rafts in the Mur valley and there further managed with carts.

In the meantime, in addition to the hammer forging in the district Guggenbach was a paper mill. Since this operation was dependent on resources from outside the valley, the railway line was built to Peggau, but what led to the decline of the hammer forging. Since 1919, the railway runs regularly between Peggau and Übelbach.

After the Second World War, the paper mill was in competition basis with larger companies and ceased its activities in 1972, finally, a. At the same time, however, the recovery of the company DI Gaulhofer, the doors and windows began producing and has the all the employees of the paper mill adopted.

The local church as an autonomous body created in 1850. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community came to Reichsgau Styria, 1945-1955, she was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.
