Učka Tunnel

The Učka tunnel (pronounced Utschka ) is a toll overland tunnel in Croatia and the shortest road route from Rijeka to Istria (by Učka Mountains ). It is located on the A8 motorway (Rovinj - Rijeka), a distance that is often used by travelers, during the peak season travel up to 6,674 vehicles per day through the tunnel.

The commissioning of the 5,062 -meter-long tunnel was carried out in 1981. The Portal height level is around 495 meters above sea level.

In the European ADAC road tunnel test in 2004, the tunnel was the worst performer with a score of "poor" from. This is mainly due to the damaged road surface and the inadequacy of escape routes. In 2005, the roadway was renewed in the tunnel. In addition to special ventilation equipment for fire scenarios are introduced. It is considered even the construction of an entirely new road tunnel through the Učka Mountains.
