UDP-Glucose-4-Epimerase

UDP-glucose 4-epimerase ( gene Gale ), and UDP -4- epimerase Glalactose, the enzyme which catalyses the rearrangement of UDP-galactose to UDP-glucose and vice versa. This reaction is a partial step in the utilization of galactose in many living things. Mutations in the GALE gene can lead to lack of epimerase and this to galactosemia type 3.

Catalysed equilibrium

UDP-glucose is redistributed into UDP -galactose and vice versa. As an alternative substrates UDP-N- acetylglucosamine -galactosamine and be accepted, but this for the metabolism has a total of no importance.
