Udria

Udria is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Vaivara ( Vaivara vald ). It is located in Ida -Viru county (East Wierland ) in northeastern Estonia.

Description and History

The village has 24 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2012). It is located directly on the Gulf of Finland, 30 kilometers from the city Jõhvi.

For nature lovers the place especially for the glacial valley of the five- kilometer Udria - Bach ( Udria oja ) and the Udria Waterfall ( Udria juga juga or Utria ) is known. On the beach there are numerous large boulders.

The place was first mentioned in records in 1241 Liber Census Daniæ. He was wearing the name Ydrigas. From the 17th Century watermill on Udria -Bach is detectable. It was pulled down in 1900, when the family left Kotschnew increase their park. The castle was destroyed in the First World War.

Like many villages in the area also experienced Udria from the mid-19th century, a boom of excursionists, who wanted to enjoy on the Baltic coast, the summer resort. It created numerous summer cottages.

1944 almost all the buildings of the town were destroyed by the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War.

Estonian War of Independence

On January 17, 1919 landed during the Estonian War of Independence Estonian Finnish troops and volunteers at Udria. They were under the command of Johan Pitka and Martin Ekström.

1939 a plaque was dedicated at the landing site. It was a year later, after the Soviet occupation of Estonia, destroyed. After regaining independence Estonia a replica of the plaque was placed on the historic site on June 2, 1990. This panel was destroyed again a year later by persons unknown. 1999, a new plaque was made.
