Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. pectinifera

Uebelmannia pectinifera is a species of the genus Uebelmannia in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ).

Description

Uebelmannia pectinifera grows with dark reddish brown to greyish, more or less cylindrical bodies reach the stature heights of up to 100 centimeters and a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. The epidermis usually appears granular and is covered with waxy, white scales. The 15 to 40 fins are sharp. The brownish to gray thereon felted areoles are very close together. The 1-4 brown to almost black thorns are spreading, often engage with each other and form a "comb". They are up to 2 inches long.

The slender funnel-shaped bright yellow flowers are up to 1.5 inches long and can reach a diameter of 1 centimeter. The pear- shaped to cylindrical fruits are purplish red and are 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long.

Systematics, distribution and hazard

Uebelmannia pectinifera is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and grows on quartzite containing sandstones. The first description was in 1967 by Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining.

There are three subspecies, which essentially differed in plant height and the number of ribs:

  • Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. pectinifera
  • Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. flavispina
  • Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. horrida

Uebelmannia pectinifera be listed in Annex I of the CITES Convention. In the Red List of Threatened Species IUCN 2002 it was classified as uncritical ( "Least Concern" ). In 2013, the species is considered " Endangered ( EN ) ', ie performed as endangered. The subspecies Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. pectinifera, Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. flavispina and Uebelmannia pectinifera subsp. horrida were in 2002 as " Vulnerable (VU) ," ie, classified as endangered. In the 2010 update, the subspecies has not been re-evaluated and removed from the red list.
