Uesugi clan

The Uesugi (Japanese上杉 氏, -shi ) was a major Japanese family from the 13th century to 1869. Important members were Uesugi Kenshin Uesugi Kagekatsu and Uesugi Harunori ( Yozan ), which is considered an exemplary ruler. The Uesugi ruled since 1598 the fief ( han ) Yonezawa, located in the eponymous city in the southern part of the province of Mutsu, today the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture.

In the tomb are the graves of twelve consecutive Uesugi. The remains of the castle today are in a park with a preserved moat and the castle wall.

During the Edo period, the Uesugi had the rank of tozama - daimyo of Yonezawa.
