Uetliberg TV-tower

The TV Tower is a 186 meter high Uetliberg Tower of reinforced concrete with a steel tower Tower on Uetliberg near Zurich. History

The predecessor of today's broadcast tower on the Uetliberg was built in 1953 for the first television broadcasts in Switzerland and had a height of 75 meters. As early as 1956 was the commissioning of the first FM radio station ( DRS 2) and the first wireless telephone connection in Switzerland. The second FM station (DRS 1) followed in 1964 and the television programs TSR and TSI in 1969. Only five years later, a new building followed. 1968, the tower was increased to 132 meters and 1983, supplemented by a 50 meter high tower for the additional local radio station Radio 24 Energy and Zurich as well as for the state broadcaster DRS 3.

1987 was the start of construction of the new tower, which commenced operations in May 1990. The construction costs were approximately eleven million Swiss francs. 1999 was the commissioning of digital audio broadcasting and in 2003 was the installation of the GSM system. On the night of May 26, 2004, an arson attack on the transmission tower. The smoldering fire caused a million damage and led to interruption of transmission of the two state-owned Swiss television programs. After 2006, the broadcasting of digital television (DVB -T) was added, was switched off the analogue television in 2007. A year later, the Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld went into operation.

Description

The 11 -meter-deep foundation with a diameter of 16 meters weighs 2250 tons, the concrete shaft in 2050, the steel tower 240 and the fiberglass tip 6 tons. In the underground cellars are rooms for telecommunications equipment. The total height of 186.7 meters, is divided into a three-beam concrete shaft with 55.2, a tubular steel tower of 111 and an upper part made ​​of GRP with 20.5 meters in length. The diameter of the steel tube tower tapers from 3.2 to 1.6 meters.

At 46.4 meters in height, there is a one-storey operation pulpit, whose façade is clad with polycarbonate lenses. The tower basket in the shape of an inverted truncated cone that tapers from 12.80 to 13.95 meters. In reinforced concrete around 140 tonnes of steel reinforcement have been processed. In addition, the tower contains 54 km prestressing wire 7 millimeters in diameter. The total weight is about 4550 tons.

With the assumed maximum wind speed of 220 kilometers per hour, the peak varies up to 2.2 meters from the vertical. The engineers and architects came from Schindler & Schindler, Zurich (today Schindler & Partners ), the construction was for the company Brunner Erben.

Range and performance

The Uetliberg TV tower covers the metropolitan area of ​​Zurich, the Limmat Valley, and parts of the Knonaueramt Glatttals.
