Ugo Bassi

Ugo Bassi ( born August 12, 1801 in Cento, † 1849) was a Catholic priest and Italian nationalist at the time of the Risorgimento.

Bassi studied at the University of Bologna. As a teenager, he joined the Barnabites, where he became friends with Alessandro Gavazzi. In 1833 he was ordained a priest. His sermons attracted large crowds.

At the outbreak of the Revolution of 1848 Bassi served as preacher for the military troops of General Giacomo Durando. In Treviso Bassi was wounded in the fight against the Austrians.

While Garibaldi was able to escape, Bassi and Count Livraghi were taken near Comacchio and handed over to the Austrians. A military tribunal in Bologna sentenced the two to death.
