UHU is a brand of adhesive and is often used in German-speaking countries as a generic name for so-called all-purpose glue - used - ie adhesives for predominantly residential applications ( paper, etc.).

The adhesive is based on an invention of the pharmacist August Fischer from 1932. This developed the first ready-made, clear adhesive resin in the world, with many used at the time, materials could be glued. UHU adhesives came with the construction of the interior of the zeppelin Hindenburg used. UHU is a 40% solution of polyvinyl acetate in acetone / methyl acetate.

The name of the adhesive is derived from the bird eagle owl. Fischer was following the tradition of paper stationery industry to designate products for large birds ( such as pelican, eagle or marabou ).

The best-known products are glue sticks for paper and household all-purpose glue in convenient tubes. Owner of the brand is the UHU GmbH & Co. KG, Bühl. The company went public in 1971 into the possession of the British Beecham Group, from which it was removed again in 1989. Since 1994 UHU is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bolton Group, today under the umbrella of the UHU Holding GmbH. The largest competitor in the German market is the Henkel Group, with the adhesive brands Pritt and Pattex.

UHU is now sold in over 125 countries around the world. The product portfolio includes a wide range of household and specialty adhesives, adhesive films and sealants.
