History

The Uhudler first came after the great phylloxera infestation around the year 1860. During this time the phylloxera was introduced to Europe, reaching around 1870 Austria. After the destruction of European grape varieties by phylloxera was tried elsewhere to win wine, such as using the highly practiced in Lower Austria Tulln field Ribiselanbau, and at the same time the phylloxera by whatever means possible fights (including lead ). In the course of phylloxera-resistant grape varieties from America were imported to Europe and crossed with native grapes. It was the Europeans have no alternative but to drink this wine direct support, the corresponded not the usual flavors. Only at the beginning of the 20th century refinement was introduced to serve in the American vines as phylloxera-resistant pad and Europeans vines form the fruiting part of the vine.

For a long time kept the legend that the wine of direct carriers containing a high proportion of fusel oils and methanol and is therefore harmful. In the 1970s, the Uhudler was limited to the use as a house drink in Austria. Production for own use was allowed. The mid-1980s, the term " house drink " is deleted in the wake of the enormous intensification of the Austrian wine law due to the glycol wine scandal in the wine law, which Uhudler was forbidden. Until the early 1990s this situation continued.

During this time, thousands of liters of Uhudler were (especially in Southern Burgenland ) evacuated from winery inspectors and channeled. One of the most famous Uhudlerweinbauernvertreter this time is the legendary Heiligenbrunner " Rubezahl " Johann Trinkl, which at the time was used for the preservation of this wine as a regional specialty.

Based on the new Austrian Wine Law of 1992, the Uhudler may be sold in eight municipalities in Burgenland today. This rule applies for the time being until 2030 and should be replaced by a new wine law then, in which the direct support places will be re- assessed.
