UIC passenger coach types
As UIC types X, Y and Z coaches are designated by the International Union of Railways ( Union internationale des chemins de fer, short UIC) were normalized for international travel in certain characteristics.
1961, the types X and Y were defined in Leaflet 567, the type Z was added later. By standardizing the traveler a uniform comfort should be provided in international traffic also should facilitate standardization of maintenance abroad. Was defined as the use of standard Gummiwulsten as a carriage transitions instead of bellows.
UIC type X
The UIC type X based on the characteristics of the Second World War by the German Federal Railroad ( DB) express train passenger cars to developed. These cars are 26.4 m long and have entrances on at the end of the car, and side gear compartments, namely:
Gemischtklassige cars usually have 6 compartments 2nd class and 1st class 5. Car type UIC -X were found in many countries in service, the largest numbers reached next to the DB, the Italian State Railways.

UIC type Y
The UIC type Y is based on the French ideas for an express wagon of international traffic. Significant differences for type X are shorter in length and the larger number of seats in the second class compartments. These cars are 24.5 m long, the entrances are also of the car ends and the side gear compartments are standard:
The French state railway SNCF was also gemischtklassige cars, couchette cars build after the same series with a baggage compartment and restaurant car.

UIC Type Z
With the development of Eurofima wagon, a new standard of comfort has been reached; the compartment number was reduced to one with the same car length, also the cars were air-conditioned. These cars were (from 1976) called type Z. However, since different paths still did not want to procure air-conditioned car or previously the compartment number compared to the Type X had decreased - the SBB for all procurements since 1969 - after all, the distinction was created in Z1 and Z2:
- Z1 = air-conditioned car with a reduced compartment number
- Z2 = non air-conditioned car with a reduced compartment number
In fact
Gemischtklassige car had 6 compartments 2nd class and 1st class 4 usually.
With the Eurofimawagen the transition was completed by the characteristic of the types X and Y Drehfalttüren to pneumatically operated sliding doors.
