Uist

Uist (pronounced [ ju ː ɪst ], [ u ː ɪst ], Scottish Gaelic: Uibhist ) denotes a Scottish chain of islands that belong to the Outer Hebrides, and are grouped because of their close proximity and their scenic similarity under one name.

Originally belonged to Uist following inhabited islands, which are connected by roadways since the mid-20th century:

Since about the turn of the millennium, the north upstream, inhabited island of Berneray and the south -lying, also inhabited island of Eriskay on roadways are accessible.

In addition, a number are small, uninhabited, islands accessible only by boat to Uist archipelago, some of which are used as sheep pastures during the summer.

Uist can be reached through the following facilities:

  • Directly by plane from Glasgow airport in Balivanich on Benbecula; this will also fly from Inverness with a stopover in Stornoway on Lewis and Harris
  • Directly from Oban on the Scottish mainland by car ferry to Lochboisdale on South Uist
  • Indirectly via neighboring islands by ferry: Castlebay ( Barra ) to Eriskay, from Uig (Isle of Skye) to Loch Maddy (North Uist ) and Leverburgh (Isle of Harris ) to Berneray
