Ukleisee

Kettle hole

The Ukleisee is located near the city Eutin ( district Sielbeck ) in the district of East Holstein. Its origin goes back to the last ice age ( Weichsel glaciation ). It is called a kettle hole.

He is surrounded by a circular route and was in the Middle Ages Slavic settlement site. Even today, old embankments and earth walls make out of an old castle. Not far from the lake is the 1776 by George Gregg Hofer built former ducal hunting lodge of Oldenburg, whose roof at night however completely burned on March 28, 2007, but has been restored again within a year. Today it is used for concerts and other events. At the time of flowering of culture Eutin in the 18th century (Weimar of the North), the lake was frequently mentioned in the literature. There are also several myths and legends that have the Ukleisee the subject.

Poem

The Uglei Lake

Tightly enclosed by hills, mysterious Cloaked in Forest Night dawns Uglei Lake, A dark eye to the sun Only looking up at the hour of noon. World strange silence reigns around here, it stimulates No hint of the abyss fair to levels Upstairs Only in treetops of the forest Converts like distant singing a roar.
