Listen Ukmergė? / I (Polish Wiłkomierz, German Wilkomir ) is a city in the east of Lithuania and lies on the banks of the šventoji. It is the seat of the homonymous Rajongemeinde Ukmergės rajono savivaldybė and has the status within that of an office district.

History

1225 Wilkemirgene in the Chronica nova Prutenica is mentioned by Wigand of Marburg. Originally it was called Vilkamergė.

The place was mentioned after 1333.

1486 The town gained its city charter by Magdeburg Law. In the city there is a large castle hill of a medieval castle.

By 1914, the city was called Vilkmergė (synonyms: Aukmergė, Likmerė; Wiłkomierz Polish, Russian Вилькомир ).

Only in the 1940s dominated the city name Ukmergė and then was officially in the postwar period.

Rajongemeinde

The Rajongemeinde includes not only the city Ukmergė still 10 towns ( miesteliai ) and 612 villages. The towns are Deltuva, Lyduokiai, Pabaiskas, Siesikai, Šešuoliai, Taujėnai, Vepriai, Vidiškiai, Želva and Žemaitkiemis.
