History

Founding and first years

The airline was established on 1 October 1992 and started its operations on 25 November 1992. Was founded as a successor to the International Air Services of Ukraine to offer flights between Kiev and Western Europe.

The company was the first company in the CIS, which was established with Western capital and procured new Boeing 737 from the factory. The founding shareholders were the Ukrainian Civil Aviation Authority and the Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA ), an Irish aircraft leasing company.

In 1996, the Austrian Airlines Group and Swissair invested new shares worth U.S. $ 9 million. In 2000, invested the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development U.S. $ 5.4 million and became the new shareholder.

Development since 2000

After in 2002 the merger with Air Ukraine, the successor company of the Soviet Kiev - division of Aeroflot, foundered on the opposition of the Western shareholders of UIA, went shortly after the Air Ukraine in bankruptcy. There is still a residual company with a few aircraft. The intra- Ukrainian lines have since been flown by local companies and the low cost airline Aerosvit Airlines.

A cooperation between Ukraine International Airlines with Air Berlin was announced on 19 January 2010.

Principal shareholder of Ukraine International Airlines was before the full privatization of state Ukrainian Trust Fund FDMU with 61.58 percent. Smaller blocks of shares held, based in Austria UIA Holding GmbH, the Capital Investment Project GmbH and a third private investor.

On 28 February 2011 the Ukrainian government trust fund FDMU handed over his participation of 61.58 percent at the Ukraine International Airlines for 287.2 million UAH ( about 26 million euros ) completely in private hands. 36.09 percent of the shares went to those private investors who previously held 22.51 percent and keep up with new 58.6 percent majority shareholding. More 15.91 percent acquired, based in Austria UIA Holding GmbH, which owns 25.85 percent of the new UIA shares. The third private investor is the Capital Investment Project GmbH, which acquired 9.58 percent of the shares and now holds 15.55 percent.

When privatizing the Dniproavia AG missed out, which belongs to the Ukrainian entrepreneurs and billionaire Ihor Kolomojskyj. Kolomojskyj held the required by the Ukrainian government trust fund FDMU price of 250 million UAH for too low and had agreed to provide according to media reports, to pay for the majority of shares in total 516.8 million UAH, when the auction would be held transparent.

In January 2013 it was announced that UIA wants to take over numerous routes of financially troubled Aerosvit Airlines, including some long-haul routes.
