Ukunda

Ukunda is a coastal village in Kenya. It is located in Kwale District about 30 kilometers south of Mombasa on the transit road A14 " Mombasa - Lunga Lunga Main Road " to Tanzania.

Ukunda has its own airport for domestic flights, which is mainly for the arrival and departure to the many beach hotels for tourists of importance as the place is located directly on Diani Beach beach.

The number of inhabitants is estimated at about 61,000 (2007). People are drawn from all parts of the country to the coast, hoping to get a small share of the " prosperity " through tourism. Therefore, the inhabitants Ukundas belong to 16 different tribes.

In Ukunda live many workers who work in the tourism industry on the south coast of Kenya. In addition, there are, in agriculture and animal husbandry, no further acquisition opportunities. 52 percent of the residents are unemployed Ukundas. There are a variety of small shops, two supermarkets, gas stations and several companies that benefit from tourism, such as car rental, a banks, souvenir shops, and a private hospital.

Industrially, Ukunda has little meaning, there are no major companies.

The site consists of a core of a mosque and smaller houses, which are built partly of stone, partly of Makuti ( palm leaves ). The main road from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam ( Tanzania) leads through the village, with a branch to Diani beach. Overland buses and truck drivers, therefore, serves the place as a sort of rest stop.
