Uli Beckerhoff

Ulrich " Uli " Beckerhoff (December 6, 1947 in Münster ) is a German jazz musician (trumpet and flugelhorn). He is since 1991 professor of jazz trumpet and ensemble conducting at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen.

Life and work

Uli Becker Hoff first studied law, then music in Münster and Cologne. At the International Jazz Jamboree in Osnabrück, he received in 1966 and 1967, the first prize as best trumpeter. First international He caused a sensation at the jazz festival in Loosdrecht (The Netherlands ), where he also took the 1st prize as a trumpeter.

With saxophonist Wolfgang Engstfeld he founded the early 1970s, the quintet jazz track, which included bassist Sigi Busch, the drummer Heinrich Hock as well as changing pianists. In 1987 and 1988 he played in parallel Uli Becker Hoff Trio with Jasper van't Hof and John Marshall.

Beckerhoff is regarded as a virtuoso trumpet player with an extraordinary range and interesting sound.

Over the years Beckerhoff worked with many German and international jazz musicians, including Stan Getz, Leon Thomas, Manfred Schoof, Albert Mangelsdorff, Joachim Kühn, Zbigniew Seifert, John Taylor, Adel Roidinger, John Abercrombie, Maria Joao, Norma Winstone, Jon Balke, Arild Andersen, Jon Christensen, Alex Riel, Marilyn Mazur and Michel Herr. He helped also with the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble.

With the Australian dancer and choreographer Rhys Martin, he developed the late 80s, the audition piece, which was performed with great success at the theaters in Basel, Bochum, Bremen, Dusseldorf and Freiburg im Breisgau.

As a composer Beckerhoff received orders for film scores as well as for radio productions; he wrote for the NDR Big Band and Symphony Orchestra.
