Ulpia Marciana

Ulpia Marciana ( * before 50; † August 29, 112) was the elder sister of Roman Emperor Trajan.

Life

Marciana was born before 50 AD, the daughter of Marcus Ulpius Trajan Roman senator. Her birth place is unknown. She was married to Gaius Salonius Matidius Patriunus. Their only child was her daughter Salonia Matidia. After her husband's death in the year 78 they are no longer married.

After the year 105, Trajan she drew from the title Augusta. She was the first sister of a Roman emperor who received this item. First, Marciana refused to accept the title. After her sister, the Empress Pompeia Plotina, insisted, however, they agreed. She then became part of the official imperial iconography. A statue of her was erected along with those of Trajan and Plotinas on the Arch of Trajan, Ancona.
