Ulrich Woronowicz

Woronowicz Ulrich ( born January 26, 1928 in Schimonken (1938-1945 Schmidtsdorf, Polish today: Szymonka ) in Sensburg / East Prussia; † 7 December 2011) was a German Protestant theologian and author.

Biography

Woronowicz grew up as the son of Karl Woronowicz, pastor of the Confessing Church. In Stallupönen (1938-1946 Ebenrode, today Russian: Nesterov ) he attended from 1935, the elementary school and high school. In 1944, he was a naval aide in Memel and Swinoujscie. In 1946 he passed his Abitur in Rendsburg.

By 1951 Woronowicz studied Protestant theology in Rostock and Berlin. From 1952 he worked as a pastor, first in Buchholz in Pritzwalk and from 1964 at the Marienkirche Berlin, then as pastor in Wittenberg. In May 1969, he received his doctorate at the Martin -Luther- University Halle- Wittenberg in Halle with the theme " function of the Schlager " in society and the church as a doctor of theology. From 1983 to 1993 Woronowicz was superintendent of the church district Havel Mountain / Wilsnack.

Even as a student, Woronowicz involved as LDP representatives in student opposition to government intervention. During his work as a theologian in the GDR, he turned against by the state -run erosion of the Church's legal position and hence restricted ecclesiastical criticism possibilities. In a lecture in 1973, he warned the church against a " subordination to the prescribed conditions " and the assumption that the GDR realities could ever claim. Instead, he called on the church the courage to change the existing society. He also has been active in a human rights issues. Woronowicz was monitored by the Stasi, which prevented his move to Berlin, and also his habilitation in 1964. In 1983 he published the samizdat Manifesto "Marxism as a doctrine of salvation ".

After his retirement in 1993 Woronowicz lived as a theologian, canonist and religious philosopher in Berlin.
