Ulten

Ultimo ( Ultimo Italian ) is a municipality with 2886 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the same Ultimo Valley in South Tyrol (Italy). It consists of the four villages of St. Walburg, Kuppelwies, St. Nicholas and St. Gertraud with surrounding scattered settlements and belongs to the district Burggrafenamt.

Geography

The first village of the municipality of Ultimo, the main town of St. Walburg, is located about 17.5 km south west of Merano and about 7.5 km from St. Pancras away to 1,190 m above sea level. Further up the valley following the hamlet Kuppelwies ( 1,153 m), then the villages of St. Nicholas ( 1,256 m ) and St. Gertraud ( 1,501 m ) and numerous scattered farms. Between St. Walburg and Kuppelwies Zoggler the water reservoir is (Italian Lago di zoccolo ) and above St. Gertraud the Weißbrunnsee (Italian: Lago di Fontana Bianca ).

In the north and west of the municipality, the more than 3000 m high Ultner mountains that form a spur of the Ortler Mountains rise.

History

The municipality was created in 1810 Ultimo by the merger of the villages of St. Pancras, St. Walburg, Kuppelwies, St. Nicholas and St.Gertraud. In 1950 the group separated from St. Pancras and became independent again.

Attractions

  • The Lahnersäge in St. Gertraud was up in the 1980s as a sawmill in operation. Today it is a National park of Stelvio National Park. Shown protection and utility functions of the forest and cutting from the tree trunk to the wood boards by the water-powered saw.
  • The three Urlärchen in St. Gertraud stand on 1430 m above sea level. 1930 2000 annual rings were counted in an overturned larch. The three Urlächen, which can still be seen today in St. Gertraud, are considered the oldest in Europe conifers.
  • The Valley Museum is located in St. Nicholas. The museum offers an insight into lifestyles of Ultner farmers.

Special

In the snowy winters, and winter sports can be practiced, such as Alpine Skiing, Extreme ski, cross country skiing, sledding, ice skating and snowshoeing.
