Umberto Betti

Cardinal Umberto Betti, OFM ( born March 7, 1922 in Pieve Santo Stefano, Arezzo Province, Italy, † April 1, 2009 in Fiesole, Florence ) was an Italian Catholic theologian and cardinal.

Life

Umberto Betti resigned after his school days on 23 July 1937, the Congregation of the Franciscan as a novice at. He put his first profession on August 2, 1938 and his perpetual vows on 31 December 1943. On 5 April 1946 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders.

He studied at the Pontifical University Antonianum, the Order of the Franciscan high school in Rome, and in 1946 received his doctorate with a dogmatic work as a doctor of theology. After teaching activities in Siena and Fiesole graduate studies followed at the Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium.

In 1964 he was appointed as Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Antonianum in Rome, where he taught until 27 September 1991. He was Dean of the Faculty of Theology, and Rector of the Antonianum.

Umberto Betti was a consultant at the Second Vatican Council. He worked on the Council documents " Dei Verbum " and "Lumen Gentium " with. After various important positions in the curia Betti was 1991-1995 rector of the Pontifical Lateran University.

He was ( " Academia Pontifical Teológica Romana " ) awarded the " Honorary Diploma " of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, as well as with the Florentine Il Fiorino d' Oro prize.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia to the College of Cardinals. Although canon law cardinals are supposed to be bishops, Betti was dispensed at his request by the Pope from this obligation.
