Umibōzu

Umibozu (Japanese海 坊 主) is a sea monster from Japanese folklore.

About the Umibozu is said that he lives in the ocean and the ship of every sailor brings to capsize who dares to talk to him. The name of this spirit, which the kanji for "( the ) sea, sea " (海, umi ) with the kanji of " Buddhist monk " (坊 主, Bozu ) combined, may refer to the fact that the Umibozu is said, a large round head, similar to the shaved head of Buddhist monks to have. In other cases, they are described as enormous Yōkai that appear shipwrecked and fishermen. It is further believed that they would be drowned priests, who show their shaven head and typically occur praying in appearance. In most cases it is reported that they had a gray, cloud-like torso and serpentine limbs.
