Union for Democracy and Social Progress (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

The Union pour la Démocratie et le Progres Social ( UDPS ) (English Union for Democracy and Social Progress, German Union for Democracy and Social Progress ) is a social liberal political party in the Democratic Republic of Congo and is one of the most important parties in addition to the MLC.

The party has the longest lasting political activity among all parties present in Congo since it was founded in 1982 and has since been continuously involved in politics. It contains in 2008 one of the largest members of properties in all political parties in the country, with several million members. According to surveys, about 75 % of the adult Congolese population identify themselves over the last decade with the Union for Democracy and Progress. The Union for Democracy and Progress boycotted the elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2006, since then they feared electoral fraud. Etienne Tshisekedi, leader of the party, ran as the top candidate of the Union for Democracy and Progress in the elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 2011.

The Union for Democracy and Social Progress has observer status in the Socialist International.
