Union Station (Providence)

The Providence Union Station describes two different resolution railway stations in Providence, Rhode Iceland in the USA.

The original Union Station was the first station in Providence, opened in 1847 to meet the needs of the flourishing city. He was described as " a brilliant example of Romanesque architecture " in his time and was the longest building in America. As the city grew, grew, so did the need to expand the station. He was undersized. In February 1896 the station suffered a catastrophic fire.

A much larger Union Station was opened in 1898, built from characteristic yellow bricks, a plant that the Providence Journal rated as a "new era in the history of this city ." The station was built of stone, Carpenter and Willson, who had already planned other buildings in Providence.

In the 1980s, rail transport fell by 75 percent. City planners saw an opportunity to dismantle the " Great Wall " of the train tracks, in the central business district, in the center of Providence's existed.
