Unit 101

Unit 101 (Hebrew: יחידה 101; Yechida 101) was an elite unit of the Israeli Defense Forces, which was set up in August 1953, Ariel Sharon.

The unit consisted of forty to fifty specially trained soldiers and resulted in particular from "search and destroy " operations against enemy targets in the neighboring Arab states. Addition, however, reprisals were carried out.

Qibya Massacre

On October 12, 1953, killed in the Israeli city of Yehud in a raid by Jordanian invaders an unarmed Jewish mother and her two children. The Israeli government decided to carry out a retaliatory attack against the village of Qibya in time of international law Jordan annexed the West Bank near the Green Line Israel. It came 69 Arabs, including 42 villagers lost their lives, 45 houses, a school and a mosque were destroyed.

This operation, known in the way of a reprisal and as Qibya massacre, though led to a drastic decrease of Palestinian attacks on Israel, but has been criticized internationally violently. Whether the Israeli forces had residents previously issued an eviction order to spare her life or not, is highly controversial.

Due to this action, the independence of the unit 101 was repealed in January 1954. It was integrated into the Paratrooper Battalion 890 and continued to participate in retaliatory attacks against military targets as part of the 202nd Parachute Brigade in part.
