United Democratic Movement

United Democratic Movement (UDM ) is a South African party.

The orientation of the party 's social democratic with an emphasis on moral values. She has her first foothold in the Eastern Cape, home of Bantu Holomisa; in other provinces it has attained only minor importance. Since the first choice inaugural 1999 UDM has been lost steadily in popularity.

History

It was founded in 1997 by Roelf Meyer, Bantu Holomisa and John Taylor. Meyer was ruled out for the National Party minister under both Frederik Willem de Klerk and Nelson Mandela, Holomisa after a military coup, 1987-1994 President of the Transkei homelands and then a member of the ANC, was then but of his party. Taylor was a member of the " Regional Executive Committee" (REC ) of the ANC. Holomisa took over the presidency, while Meyer was his deputy.

UDM approached with the claim to be a party for all South Africans of all backgrounds and race. In the national elections of 1999, the collection managed to parliament. In January 2000, however, Meyer left the party and pulled a few years back from politics, while Holomisa has remained party leader until now. In 2002, UDM profiled in particularly by the Constitution lawsuit against the floor crossing, but could not prevent its legalization eventually. A direct consequence of this was that in early 2003 the first time window in which the floor crossing was possible, 10 of the 14 deputies left the party and mostly joined the ANC. Despite these events, UDM was (albeit with significant losses ) into parliament again in the elections of 2004. Since 2009, the party is not represented by four members of parliament, including Holomisa.
