United Nations Angola Verification Mission III

The United Nations Angola Verification Mission III ( UNAVEM III) was after I UNAVEM and UNAVEM II, the third of three successive peacekeeping missions of the United Nations in Angola, to end the protracted civil war.

This mission began on 1 February 1995 and ended on 30 June 1997.

UNAVEM III had a strength of 7,000 troops and military support personnel, 350 military observers, 260 police observers, 420 civilian employees and 300 local staff.

Tasks

The central task of UNAVEM III was to support the MPLA and UNITA factions in implementing its peace treaties of 31 May 1991, the Lusaka Protocol of 20 November 1994 and the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. In order to guarantee good management was (good offices ) and the constant balance between the parties required to observe the construction of a new state administration in Angola and to verify to monitor the cease-fire, to control and to ensure the unbundling of the troops of the civil war parties to verify any information of MPLA and UNITA over their troops to help with the withdrawal of UNITA and the establishment of collection points for fighters UNITA and to demobilize them to regroup the troops of the government and barrack, the free movement of persons and goods to ensure in the country to monitor the neutrality of the Angolan police and to guarantee the safety of UNITA. In addition UNAVEM III supported humanitarian operations in Angola, the clearing of the mines and the last held elections.
