United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA short (of English. United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan), is one of the United Nations ( UN) political mission, which is based on policies approved by the UN Security Council on 28 March 2002 Resolution 1401. The mandate was extended several times and is currently up to March 2014 [ deprecated] limited.

Head of the Mission is since 23 November 2011, the Special Representative for Afghanistan Jan Kubis, the former foreign minister of Slovakia. Its predecessors were Kai Eide, Tom Koenigs, Jean Arnault, Lakhdar Brahimi and Staffan de Mistura. The Deputy Special Representative for Reconstruction is Robert Watkins, a British and Canadians; the German Martin Kobler is Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs.

The mission, led by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, has about 1,000 mostly Afghan employees. The headquarters is in Kabul. There are eight regional offices, several sub- offices and liaison offices in Islamabad and Tehran.

Political tasks

From 12 to 19 June 2002, a Loya Jirga (Emergency Loya Jirga ) was held on the grounds of Kabul Polytechnic. Refugees and reconstruction

UNAMA coordinated the efforts of other UN organizations ( eg UNHCR ) and national and international NGOs.
