United Nations Development Fund for Women

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (French Fonds de développement des Nations Unies pour la femme, UNIFEM, English United Nations Development Fund for Women; Spanish Fondo de Desarrollo de las Naciones Unidas para la Mujer ) was a special organ of the United Nations. It was founded in 1976 with the aim of providing financial and technical assistance to innovative programs, the implementation of women-specific human rights concerns, the realization of political equality and economic opportunities. Within the UN UNIFEM ensured that all projects were also evaluated from a gender perspective. UNIFEM went to the newly formed organ UN Women in January 2011.

Mandate

  • Mediation at national and international level to ensure that the interests of women can be better perceived by greater participation of women in decision-making processes in all areas.

Work

UNIFEM was established in 1976 on the initiative of Helvi Sipilä in response to the demands of women's organizations during the first UN World Conference on Women in Mexico City ( 1975). She was present in more than 100 countries.
