United Nations Development Programme

 

The development program of the United Nations (English United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, French programs des Nations Unies pour le développement, UNDP ) is an Executive Committee within the UN General Assembly. The UNDP Head is the third highest office within the hierarchy of the United Nations ( UN), immediately after the UN Secretary General and his deputy. The UNDP Executive Committee consists of representatives from 36 countries worldwide, which are used on a rotating basis. The project office was established in 1995 as UNOPS (see below) spun off as an independent organization.

Headquartered in New York City, has offices in Europe ( Geneva, Brussels, Copenhagen ), Japan ( Tokyo ) and the USA (Washington DC). The UNDP is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from UN member states. The organization has country offices in 166 countries. Of these headends from UNDP works with local governments to address the development challenges together. In addition, UNDP will help the respective developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals ( MDGs).

The UNDP supports through the provision of advisory capacities, training, and grant funds. Here, an increasing focus is placed on promoting the so-called Least Developed Countries ( LDCs). To achieve the Millennium Development Goals and advance the global development, UNDP focuses on poverty reduction, HIV / AIDS, democratic governance, energy and environment as well as the general crisis prevention. Mainstreamed in all programs is the protection of human rights and the equal treatment of women. The program also coined 1994 the concept of human security, among other things, the reform debate on the United Nations influenced.

History

The UNDP was established in 1965 to combine the existing since 1949 Advanced Program for Technical Cooperation and in 1956 created the Special Fund of the United Nations. In 1971, the complete integration of the two organizations.

In 1995, the Office for Project Services of the United Nations, United Nations Office for Project English Services ( UNOPS) spun off as an independent service organization from the UNDP. UNOPS took over the management and implementation of programs on behalf of the UN organizations. An example is UNOSAT.

The largest single donor is Japan, with a total contribution of 443 million USD (2012), followed by the USA with USD 325 million and USD 216 million with Sweden. Germany stands with a total contribution of $ 104 million in seventh digit of the largest single donor.

Tasks

  • Democratic Governance

UNDP supports the transition to democratic systems through policy advice and technical assistance. Here, the institutional and individual capacities in the developing countries are to be strengthened. This includes the formation of broad social layers to democratic reforms, promoting negotiation and dialogue as well as the transfer of experience from other countries and regions.

  • Poverty reduction

UNDP helps countries to develop strategies to combat poverty. The poverty goals be linked to the broader development objectives of the countries so that poor people also get a greater impact in the overall development context. At the macroeconomic level, UNDP is working on the reform of international trade, debt relief and the promotion of foreign investment.

  • Crisis Prevention

The UNDP is working to reduce the risk of armed conflicts and disputes. Examples of risk mitigation measures in advance efforts to curb the proliferation of small firearms were aimed at developing strategies to reduce the impact of natural disasters, and set up programs to encourage the use of diplomacy.

  • Energy and Environment

Since poor countries are disproportionately affected by environmental degradation and thereby lack access to clean and affordable energy, UNDP seeks to address environmental issues in order to simultaneously achieve sustainable development in the developing countries. This is done, inter alia, through innovative policy advice and networking with other partners.

The environmental policies of the UNDP focus this efficient water management, access to sustainable energy, sustainable agriculture to combat desertification and land destruction, preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, and the development of a policy for the control of emissions and ozone - depleting substances.

Organization

The annually published World Development Report of the United Nations Development Programme ( Human Development Report ) is a study of the UNDP and describes the development of poverty and wealth in the world. The contained therein Human Development Index ranks countries according to the level of education, life expectancy and average per capita income.
