United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (English Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, ESCWA or UNESCWA ) is one of five regional commissions of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations ( ECOSOC). Area of ​​responsibility are the countries of the Arabian Peninsula and the North African countries of Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia and Morocco.

It was founded in 1973 as the Economic Commission for Western Asia (English Economic Commission for Western Asia, ECWA or UNECWA ), it was renamed in 1985 and should point to the social tasks of the committees in the region. The Commission has its headquarters in Beirut ( Lebanon) and has the promotion and development of its 17 member states in the social and economic field goal.
