United Nations Human Settlements Programme

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme - UN -HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme, including Human Settlements Summit ) is the Human Settlements Programme of the United Nations. 2001, it was by resolution A/56/206 of the UN General Assembly to a stand-alone program of the UN. The headquarters of the organization is in Nairobi / Kenya with additional regional offices in Fukuoka and Rio de Janeiro.

HABITAT I

In 1976 took place in Vancouver / Canada, the first World Summit of the United Nations settlement under the name HABITAT instead. He dealt with issues of housing supply and housing. As a result of this conference, the UNCHS was founded in 1978. It consists of 58 Member States, representing all regions of the world. Its mission is to support the work of HABITAT politically and evaluate and advise the UN General Assembly and the UN Economic and Social Council in issues of sustainable development in residential and Human Settlements.

HABITAT II

1996 took place in Istanbul / Turkey, the second Summit ( Habitat II, and The Cities Summit ) instead. It was marked by the huge increase in the meantime worldwide urbanization and urban decay. Finally, the " Habitat Agenda " and the " Istanbul Declaration" was adopted. Here concepts of an adequate, sustainable development in the construction and human settlements were developed and codified. The global action plan includes:

  • Adequate, needs-based accommodation for all
  • Sustainable human settlements development in an urbanising world
  • Creation of capacity and institutional development
  • International cooperation and coordination
  • Implementation and monitoring of the Habitat Agenda

2001 met at a Special Session of the UN General Assembly in New York / USA together all 171 Member States participating in the Programme of the United Nations to represent their successes. At this meeting (Istanbul 5), many States submitted the first time in front of National Reports on the implementation of the Habitat Agenda, including Germany with the report " Towards a sustainable urban development".

HABITAT III

The third summit will be held in 2016. This was 66/xxx at the UN General Assembly in Resolution and adopted Resolution 67/216. The title of the conference is "Third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development", the place has not yet been decided.

World Urban Forums

Since 2002 HABITAT organized every two years the so-called World Urban Forum ( WUF ). The fourth forum WUF -4, was held from 3 - held in Nanjing, China 6 November 2008. The fifth forum was held from March 22 to 26, 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, the sixth Forum 2012 in Naples, Italy. The seventh World Urban Forum is scheduled for April 2014 in Medellin, Colombia, planned.

NGOs

Parallel to the development of the UN Human Settlements Programme, developed a rich landscape of non-governmental organizations and urban grassroots movements, the internationally networked and took effect on international agreements and negotiations. A highlight of the participation of the NGO sector was the forum of non-governmental organizations in the HABITAT II Conference in Istanbul. A traditional international network of the Habitat movement is the HABITAT International Coalition ( HIC), whose predecessor was founded as the International Council HABITAT 1976 in Vancouver.
