United States at the 1924 Winter Olympics

The United States participated in the Winter Olympic Games in 1924 in Chamonix with a delegation of 24 athletes in four sports part. The American NOK had reported 25 athletes to the games, 24 of which participated in competitions. A total of five athletes were already for the second time at the Olympic Games here:

  • Theresa Blanchard (1920 Figure Skating)
  • Herbert Drury (1920 Ice Hockey)
  • Gerry Geran (1920 Ice Hockey)
  • Nathaniel Niles (1920 Figure Skating)
  • Frank Synott (1920 Ice Hockey)

Balance: The Americans came as exotics to Chamonix and drove as the fourth best nation back home. With the exception of ice hockey teams, the silver medal was virtually booked in advance, and the figure skaters Theresa Blanchard and Nathaniel Niles was known in Europe not the other reported Olympian. Therefore, no one could estimate how strong the American team really was. Charles Jewtraw ( speed skating ) and Beatrix Loughran (Figure Skating) therefore came as a phoenix from the ashes and were a complete surprise to the podium. This Jewtraw even the first Olympic champion in the Winter Games ever. 50 years after the competitions of Chamonix was the already 86 -year-old native Norwegian Anders Haugen, he emigrated before the First World War to the United States, subsequently awarded a bronze medal in ski jumping, when it was found a calculation error of the jury from 1924. So it was at the end of four medals for the United States. As Haugen were the skier Ragnar Omtvedt and Sigurd Overbye of Norwegian descent.
