United States Deputy Secretary of Defense
The United States Deputy Secretary of Defense ( DEPSECDEF ) is according to the Minister of Defence of the highest-ranking official in the Ministry of Defense of the United States. He is appointed with the advice and consent of the Senate by the U.S. president. The laws regulations state that the deputy minister must be a civilian; its potential as an officer in active military service has zurückzuliegen at least seven years on the day of his appointment.
History
The Office of the Deputy Minister of Defense was created in April 1949. Originally, the incumbent was initially referred to as Under Secretary of Defense. In August of the same year the National Security Act was accordingly extended from 1947 that the title to Deputy Secretary of Defense has changed. Stephen Early, previously assistant to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was the first occupant of the office and was sworn in on May 2, 1949. On 10 August this year, he was the Under Secretary to the Deputy Secretary.
In October 1972, the position of Second Deputy Secretary of Defense was created by law. First and only owner was between 23 December 1975 and January 10, 1977 Robert Fred Ellsworth; thereafter the office was abolished.
Remit
In the event that the respective defense minister dies or resigns, the Deputy Secretary is the first successor. It is entrusted with all powers which the Minister has. In the usual daily routine of Defense Deputy Minister as the Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the Authority. He oversees the management activity, while the defense minister takes care of the thematic areas of highest priority and advises the President directly in military matters. His deputy, meanwhile, as chairman of the Senior Level Review Group and the overall supervision of the Quadrennial Defense Review.
