United States Institute of Peace

The United States Institute of Peace ( USIP ) is an American federal institution for the study and prevention of violent conflicts around the world. The U.S. Congress decided in 1984 signed the relevant law, the foundation of the USIP and President Ronald Reagan. This law prohibits the USIP to accept private donations; funding from the federal government to protect it from interference.

The Washington D.C. based USIP operates in more than 30 countries, including Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. 2006 formed the USIP the bipartisan Iraq Study Group.

President of USIP since 1993 Richard H. Solomon, former U.S. ambassador to the Philippines. His designated successor is former Congressman Jim Marshall.
