United States Post Office (Belvidere, Illinois)

The U.S. Post Office in Belvidere is a historic building in the center of Belvidere, Illinois. It was built in 1911 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 2000 with the number 00,000,473.

History

The building was erected in 1911 by the Bauunternehnmer E. Maffioli from Rockford. The survey for the United States Department of the Treasury performs ON Eason. The schedule for the building looked before the completion of construction for the 1st September and the start-up for October 11, 1911. The work was completed within the time frame and the post office was inaugurated on 11 October 1911 large participation of the interested public. The post office was in operation until 1997, when it was offered for sale. 1998, it was eventually sold to a private individual.

Architecture

The U.S. Post Office Belvidere is built in neo-classical style and has several characteristics typical of this style. It was designed by James Knox Taylor, who was then the chief architect of the U.S. Treasury Department. In his design, he uses a mixture of classical forms and the Renaissance. The inner dome, the broken pediment above the entrance area ( a typical form of neoclassicism ), fine-grained stone carvings, a monumental frame and the sculptural details are commonly found in buildings in the style of neoclassicism.

Historical Significance

The post office of Belvidere reflects the architecture that was preferred by the Federal Government of the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. The building is a significant example of the architecture of the Classical Revival and one of the outstanding buildings in this style in Belvidere.
