United States presidential election, 1840

In the U.S. Presidential Election 1840 President Martin Van Buren was fighting for his re-election at a time of economic depression and a Whig Party against which the first time closed rallied behind the war hero William Henry Harrison. With the slogan " Tippecanoe and Tyler, too" the Whigs Van Buren defeated quite easily. This election is unique in that the voter votes for four men charges that were either already or it would still be President: President Martin Van Buren; the presidential candidate William Henry Harrison; the vice- presidential candidate John Tyler, who would succeed Harrison upon his death in office; and James K. Polk, who received one vote in the election for vice-president.

William Henry Harrison was the first president who died in office ( April 4, 1841), only 30 days after he assumed the presidency. So that his tenure is the shortest of all presidents. It is said that he, after he had held his two-hour Vereidigungsrede in cold weather, possibly sustain pneumonia and eventually died. Harrison was until 1980, when Ronald Reagan was elected president, the oldest president.
