The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia ( UTM) (English Technological University of Malaysia ) in Johor Bahru, State of Johor is the oldest state technical university in Malaysia. It was founded in 1904 as Technical School and is a Research University today with over 20,000 students. The motto of the University is Kerana Tuhan Untuk Manusia ( For God to man ).

History

The forerunner of today's University was founded in 1904 as a technical school to technical assistants for the civil service in Malaysia to train. The students attended the courses offered in part-time, according to their work. 1941 was proposed by the Advisory Committee of Technical Schools and the Education school in a technical university ( Technical College ) to convert. The planning for this college but had to be postponed due to the Japanese occupation in World War II. After the war, the school was reopened in 1946 and 1955 converted to a newly built campus in a technical university. In the first years no academic degrees but only diplomas in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, surveying and architecture were awarded. In 1958, about 320 students studying at the university and in 1960 awarded the first academic degrees. Due to the fast growing economy in Malaysia was planned the college to convert it into a university. Therefore, in 1972, the University Institute Teknologi Kebangsaan ( ITK ) has been renamed and received university status. This was given its present name in 1975. In the following years was an expansion of the faculties and in the 1990's the first non- technical faculties were founded.

Organization

The highest authority of Hochschschulleitung is the Board of Directors, which sets the basic direction of the university. The Chancellor is an honorary position and is occupied by a well-known personality, while the full-time management of the University is headed by the Vice-Chancellor.
