University and State Library Düsseldorf

The University and Regional Library Dusseldorf is a central service unit of the Heinrich -Heine- University of Dusseldorf. In addition, it performs the national library tasks for the state of North Rhine -Westphalia labor with the ULB Bonn and the ULB Münster.

The ULB Dusseldorf consists of a central library and four remote sites. Management and media processing are organized centrally. Catalogs, databases, e -books and e -journals available through the library network both in the whole university and on the domestic workplace.

History

Predecessor of the University and State Library Dusseldorf is the Electoral founded by Elector Karl Theodor of the Palatinate, Duke of Jülich and Berg, 1770 in Dusseldorf public Bibliotheque. After its name in the Napoleonic Wars and the ensuing political changes had changed several times, it was performed as the Royal State Library since about 1830. 1904 was handed over to the city of Dusseldorf. Under the sponsorship of the city it was continued as a state and city library Dusseldorf.

Today's University and State Library has gradually emerged in the years 1965 to 1969 from the Medical Academy of Dusseldorf. For the University and State Library there is no actual date of establishment. With the acquisition of the former state and public library of the city of Dusseldorf by the University in 1970 and the merger with the central library of the former Medical Academy, however, the foundation stone was laid for the single- library system of the university. In addition, the ULB Dusseldorf created since 1983 along with the ULB Münster, North Rhine- Westphalia bibliography, an online database, which opens up the literature on North Rhine- Westphalia content up to the top level. Since 1993, they shall perform the duties of a State Library of North Rhine -Westphalia.

In this role, she is primarily responsible for the administrative district Dusseldorf: it has a legal depository for appearing in this field media and acquires the regional studies literature on North Rhine -Westphalia and in particular the regional literature on the Lower Rhine area, the Ruhr and the Bergische Land. Collections (selection)

Thomas Mann Collection

The University and Regional Library houses one of the largest collections of works by and about Thomas Mann. Initially built by the Düsseldorf Germanists Hans -Otto Mayer, it includes not only works spending, autographs, first editions and rare translations, and extensive secondary literature.

Manuscripts

The documentation retained in the University and State Library ancient manuscripts date back to the eighth century. Mostly they come from herds or Rhenish Westphalian monasteries and receive mainly liturgical and theological texts, including several hundred Bible and theological manuscripts, hagiographic and ascetic manuscripts, canonical and Roman legal and historiographical manuscripts.

The existence of the university and state library contains nearly 1,000 incunabula. Among these is single copies and fragments from the beginnings of the art of printing. The incunabula and old prints mostly come from the Rhineland and the Netherlands.
