University of Charleston

The University of Charleston is a private college in Charleston (West Virginia) with about 1000 students. Locals call the university often " UC ".

The school was founded in 1888 at the Barboursville Seminary of the Southern Evangelical Church Methodology. When the church lost control of the university, it was renamed Marshall University. Marshall located near Huntington (West Virginia). During the American Civil War in 1901, it was renamed in honor of Major Donorins in Morris Harvey College.

In 1935, the school was moved to Charleston Downtown, merged with Kanawha Junior College and was the Mason College of Fine Arts and Music connected. 1942, the school became independent of the Evangelical Church Methodology. Five years later, in 1947, the school moved back to their original school system in the Kanawha City neighborhood of Charleston.

The college came into the tough economic times of the 1970s, in a crisis, was in thinking about the nationalization of the college. However, the state refused the gift. The school then decided to increase their attention in the community and renamed themselves about 1987 in Charleston University has to offer.

The athletic teams of UC, known as the Golden Eagles, playing in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the NCAA in the 2nd Division.

The school is not related to the Charleston 's College in Charleston (South Carolina).
