The University of Glamorgan ( Welsh: Morgannwg Prifysgol ) ( UOG ) is a Welsh University of Glamorgan. It includes the campus Trefforest, Glyntaff, Trefforest Industrial Estate, Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff. The University of Glamorgan is the only Welsh university regardless of the state University of Wales.

History

The University of Glamorgan was established in 1913 as the School of Mines to train junior staff primarily in the mining and engineering for the coal industry of South Wales. Later it became the Glamorgan Polytechnic, then the Polytechnic of Wales. In 1992, the university named University of Glamorgan. The UOG is one of the " New Universities" so-called because they emerged from a Polytechnic.

About the University

In recent years, the University has introduced some very modern courses, eg Astrobiology or Astronomy and Culture. Currently the university has about 18,000 students. The students of various foreign partner programs are not counted. Of these, about 15,000 students are enrolled in bachelor's degree programs.

Campus

The university has several locations:

  • Trefforest - The main campus here, along with the faculties and the main library and the sports club, the student dormitories and fraternity. The campus is within walking distance of the train station Trefforest. The terrain on campus rises in places by 30 %. The dormitories are located on the hillside above the lecture building.
  • Glyntaff - Here are the Law School and the School of Care Sciences. This campus has its own specialized library.
  • Tyn Y Wern - ( / tɪŋ ɜ wɛɹn / ) is located in Trefforest Industrial Estate. It is the outdoor sports complex of the university.
  • Partner colleges - The University maintains partner schools across South Wales.
  • Cardiff - Cardiff Add a new campus was opened in 2007 near the Cardiff Queen Street.

Campus Life

On campus Trefforest there are two halls of residence:

  • Glamorgan Court - the newer residence is at the top of the mountain organized in apartments, each with six rooms. An apartment is divided in each case the kitchen. The rooms include separate wash cubicles, which are due to the poor ventilation in varying condition of the mold infestation. The kitchen is weekdays cleaned by a cleaning service. Not every home has a house phone. The house phones are located in the cross blocks in the stairwell.
  • Neuadd Philip Evans & Neuadd Philip Squire - The older residence is organized into 15 apartments with parties that share bathroom and kitchen. In each of the residence halls, there is a common room with TV.

The Trefforest campus is home to the only run by students in Wales TV station with GlamTV. There is a computer room, which is accessible 24 hours, and is well attended, as it has not been possible up to and including 2005, set up Internet access on the dorm rooms.

The Learning Resource Centre offers the possibility of language courses eg to graduate in Welsh, Spanish, German and Italian. However, the range rarely extends out over an entry- level. The University offers a comprehensive social service. This includes, for a student counseling and life coaching, on the other -one care for the disabled and those with learning disabilities.

University of Glamorgan in Germany

The UOG keeps or has held a number of collaborations with other universities, in Germany for example, the University of Cooperative Education Mosbach, the Duale Hochschule Baden- Württemberg Heidenheim, halibut business school, the University of Bremen, the University of Rosenheim, the Albstadt-Sigmaringen University, the University economic and environmental Nürtingen and the University of Hannover.
